Clyde Tombaugh and his 9-inch Telescope

Pluto's discoverer, Clyde Tombaugh, is pictured here with one of his homemade Newtonian Telescopes. Tombaugh developed a passion for science at a young age with encouragement from his Uncle Lee who lent him his own three-inch telescope and books on astronomy. In 1926, Tombaugh constructed his first, eight-inch reflector telescope out of scrap materials from his family's farm.
