Harvard College Observatory Announcement Card

Subject

Pluto; Planet X; Astronomy; Planetary Discovery; Lowell Observatory; Harvard College Observatory; Flagstaff; Boston; Shapley, Harlow.

Description

On March 13, 1930, Harvard College Observatory announced the discovery of the new trans-Neptunian planet which had been predicted by Percival Lowell several years earlier. Harvard College Observatory and Lowell Observatory had a close relationship due to the fact that Percival Lowell's younger brother, A. Lawrence Lowell, served as Harvard's President from 1909 to 1933. The Lowell family had much influence in their home city of Boston, therefore the observatory in Flagstaff saw it appropriate to allow Harvard to make an official statement on the newly discovered planet.
