Subject

Pluto; Planet X; Astronomy; Planetary Discovery; Lowell Observatory; Amundson, Lauren; Flagstaff.

Description

Photograph of Lowell Observatory's archivist, Lauren Amundson (right), with Pluto the dog in Disneyland. In a 1930 short film titled "The Picnic," Pluto first appeared with the name "Rover." He later appeared in another short film released on May 3, 1931 titled "The Moose Hunt" and his name was changed to Pluto. It is not clear whether Walt Disney changed the name to be relevant to the discovery of the planet Pluto, but many animators have since theorized that this was the reason for the name change.
